Advanced Pulsed-Power Solutions for Defense, Counter-Drone Operations, and Lightning Vulnerability Assessment of Critical Systems

ITOPP develops high-power microwave systems for threat neutralization and infrastructure protection, including counter-drone solutions and non cooperative vehicle stopping system based on directed energy technologies.

High Power Microwave

High Power Microwaves constitute an emerging threat from the battlefields. The intense electromagnetic fields that are radiated by such effectors can effectively disturb and even destroy electronic systems. In order to preserve, in the medium term, the operational character of certain pieces of equipment that carry electronic cards, it is essential to evaluate their vulnerability. Protective measures can then be put in place.

ITOPP has mastered all the technological elements making up high power microwave equipment.

High-Power Microwave Equipment

SKYPULSE, high power microwave system

High power microwave system engineered for aerial threat neutralization, integrating a pulsed power Marx generator with a Backward Wave Oscillator (BWO) to generate directional electromagnetic pulses.

Counter Drone System

Protect your vulnerable/sensitive sites from drone incursions

Drone intrusions now pose a direct threat to sensitive sites, critical infrastructure, and aerial operations. Often classified as leisure and entertainment devices, drones can easily be diverted for malevolent purposes: espionage, transport of illicit objects, disruption of air traffic, or terrorist actions.

To address these risks, ITOPP develops a a directed energy weapon to counter drone, based on high-power microwave (HPM) technology.

Anti-UAV mobile defence system based on high power microwave

The system generates a beam of high-powered microwaves in order to disturb or even destroy the electronics of the UAVs without munitions and without dependency on GNSS or communication systems.

  • Defeating isolated drones and swarm of drones
  • Non kinetic neutralization
  • Immediate and controllable effect
  • Lower cost per engagement
  • Wide area coverage

This approach addresses evolving threats, including autonomous drones or those hardened against conventional jamming.

Mobile, Integrated, and Operationally Deployable System

ITOPP develops a turnkey, transportable system designed for constrained environments:

  • High-power microwave effector mounted on a rotating turret
  • Integrable on mobile platforms
  • Battery-powered for deployment in isolated locations

Uncooperative vehicle stopping system

In a context of a significant increase in refusals to comply, existing intervention devices are reaching their limits. ITOPP has developed an interception device based on electromagnetic radiation, designed to be mounted on a mobile platform. This system enables law enforcement to safely stop uncooperative vehicles, particularly cars, by disrupting their operation without physical contact. The solution is intended to enhance intervention efficiency while minimizing risks during pursuits or controlled stops.

High power microwave system based on GaN Technology
A specific solution for two-wheeled vehicles

In a lighter configuration specifically adapted for two-wheeled vehicles such as motorcycles and scooters, the system is integrated directly into law enforcement motorcycles. It consists of battery cases and an electronic control unit installed at the rear of the vehicle, connected via a cable to a planar antenna mounted near the handlebars on either side. A human-machine interface (HMI) is positioned at the front, under the visor, allowing officers to operate the device easily while in motion.

ITOPP also provides specialized pulsed-power test systems to assess the direct and indirect effects of lightning strikes on aircraft structures (planes, helicopters, UAVs), land-based vehicles, and heavy weapon systems. These turnkey, standards-compliant solutions enable engineers to qualify and strengthen critical assets against lightning-induced damage in demanding operational environments.

Vulnerability Tests to Lightning

Test Bench for Simulating the Direct and Indirect Effects of Lightning

Lightning qualification is a critical safety and certification challenge for modern aircraft and defence platforms.
ITOPP provides custom pulsed-power test systems that enable engineers to assess both direct and indirect lightning effects with industrial-grade robustness.

On average, an aircraft is struck by lightning every 1,500 flight hours. To reduce aircraft weight and improve performance, metallic fuselage structures are increasingly replaced by lightweight composite materials. This evolution reduces the effectiveness of the Faraday cage effect, making aircraft more vulnerable to lightning-induced phenomena and increasing the need for dedicated vulnerability assessments.

When an aircraft is struck, high-intensity currents flow through the structure. These currents can cause direct effects, such as mechanical damage to structural elements or perforation of the airframe, as well as indirect effects, including electromagnetic disturbances affecting onboard electronic systems.

Based on applicable standards and regulations—detailed in the associated datasheet—and on customer-defined performance objectives, ITOPP designs and manufactures custom pulsed-power test systems. These systems are developed to simulate both direct and indirect lightning effects, supporting qualification, validation, and vulnerability assessments of structures and onboard equipment in demanding operational environments.

Capabilities – Lightning Test Systems

ITOPP’s high-performance pulsed-power generators enable engineers to:

  • Simulate direct lightning strikes on structures, ensuring mechanical and electrical resilience
  • Reproduce indirect effects, including induced currents, voltage surges, and electromagnetic interference
  • Assess the behaviour of materials, including metals and advanced composite structures

Whether for aircraft structure designers or developers of hardened electrical and electronic systems, ITOPP provides test solutions that enable detailed analysis of the effects of lightning-type discharges on materials and systems subject to stringent lightning requirements.

These systems can be used to assess a wide range of aircraft platforms, including fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and UAVs. They can also be deployed to evaluate lightning vulnerability in land-based vehicles and critical defence systems.
